It was also the first planetary nebula discovered (by Charles Messier in 1764). It is easily visible with binoculars. It is believed to be no more than 9,800 years old. The central star, a white dwarf, is about 5% of the size of the Sun with a mass of about 55% of the Sun, making it the largest known white dwarf. It has an angular size of about 8 arc minutes. The Helix Nebula is the only planetary nebula appearing larger. |
